Scholarship Rates to Increase 25% for Eligible Applicants

Members of the FMC Community Empowerment board recently approved a 25 percent increase in preschool scholarship rates for the coming school year.    The scholarships are made available through the Floyd-Mitchell-Chickasaw Community Empowerment organization’s 2006 School Ready Grant.

According to Laurie Kristiansen, FMC Empowerment coordinator, the scholarships are based on the 2006 USDA guidelines for free and reduced school lunches.

Applicants may qualify under free or reduced school lunch guidelines.

Rates for the coming school year are as follows:
2-day program:  Reduced rate: $30 scholarship; free rate:  $40 scholarship
3-day program:  Reduced rate:  $45 scholarship; free rate: $60 scholarship
5-day program:  Reduced rate:  $75 scholarship; free rate: $100 scholarship.

The 25 percent increase in scholarship rates is possible this year because of recent legislation signed by Governor Vilsack supporting Early Childhood directives.  One of the key areas the local FMC Empowerment group will be working to enhance is increased preschool services and training/educational opportunities for providers.

Interested persons can contact the preschool of their choice for scholarship applications, or call FMC Community Empowerment at:  641-435-4435 for a copy of the application and guidelines.  Applications can also be downloaded from the FMC Empowerment website at:  fmcempowerment.com

Scholarship applicants are asked to fill out the forms and return them to the preschool of their choice.  Scholarship awards will be announced by preschools in September.  The scholarships run September through May.

Participating preschools in the FMC Empowerment zone include:
